Here we aim to bring you details of the efforts made in our
community to minimize the incidence of crime and its effects on those who live
here. If you know of any initiatives which you would like us to publicize then
please do contact us.
From the Safer Neighbourhood Police
Team:
o Please do not leave any items on display in your vehicles. Suspects
are smashing windows to take items left on show; make sure if you have a
sat nav. that you clean the sucker mark off the windscreen and
definitely leave nothing of value in the glove compartment. Suspects are
even breaking into vehicles to take cds left on display. If you see
anyone acting suspiciously at anytime observing vehicles or properties
in the neighbourhood please do not hesitate to call the Police.
o For Emergencies which includes when possible suspects are seen call :
999
o For Non Emergency and to report crime: 0300 123 1212
o For Bowes SNT : 0208 721 2679
|
o We have had more burglaries where the suspect has
taken advantage of the good weather and entered the property through the
garden putting an arm through an ajar small window to open a larger
window and then exiting the property with goods through the large
window.
o Please be vigilant to lock windows with window locks and if you have
UPVC windows it is not enough to close the window you must turn the key.
o If you have a side gate make sure it is locked.
o Please make sure your fences around your garden are well maintained to
avoid helping the burglar to garden hop.
o Make sure your shed is secured and that you or your neighbours have
not left tools in the garden for the suspect to use to break into your
house with.
o If you would like a free Crime prevention Survey on your home and
garden please call us on 0208 721 2679.

Recent Advice from our Safer
Neighbourhoods Police Team
Please can you look out for all your elderly
and vulnerable neighbours at the moment as we are experiencing a rise in
artifice burglaries. The callers are Male or Female, they will say
there is a water leak and they are from the Council or the Water board,
they are undercover Police Officers or even will pretend they are
delivering flowers. The callers could pretend they are from any of the
major utility suppliers but you
don't have to let them in,
make sure you put the chain on, take the persons details, close the door
and make a call to the company or to the Police if you believe the call
to be suspicious. The Council will always send you a letter first to
inform you of a visit, if the caller is genuine they will not mind you
checking their details. With all the major utilities you can set up a
password system so the technician has to say your chosen password
through the door before you let them in which will prove you are letting
in a genuine caller.
You may have experienced calls at the
door asking for money with a whole sob story attached. I'm afraid drug
addicts will beg on doorsteps with the ruse they need money for
electricity etc - please do not
give money,
Please do contact us with times and
descriptions or report the incident via the numbers given.
Recently there has been a boy going door to door collecting for a bogus
boxing club. I know it is very sad when you feel you cannot trust even
children nowadays but I am
concerned that you do not become a victim of anything
so it is 'better to be safe than sorry'.
Refer such young people to the Police and if genuine we will support and
fund most diversions on the Borough.
Anything suspicious do not hesitate to
call us on 020 8721 2679, Non Emergency 0300 123 1212 or in an Emergency
call 999. You can also call Consumer Direct on 0845 404 0506 if you
have been cold called to check if the company is genuine.
If you know your neighbours over the
age of 60 or other vulnerable neighbours could do with either spy hole,
chain or bolts fitted please give me their details and I will refer them
to The Safehouse Project which is a free service from the Community
Safety Unit in the Council.
| And more advice, issued by our
Safer Neighbourhoods Team at the end of May:
There has been another artifice burglar on
the west of the ward who asked to get into the property
under the ruse that they were working on a neighbouring
property and had to enter their garden. The elderly victim
went through to the garden and the suspects went through the
drawers in the house whilst the victim waited for them to
reach the garden.
This is why it is so important to know
your neighbours and be aware what is going on in your
street. These Con men and women will dress up in uniforms or
overalls and will be very convincing, they will be looking
in the streets for the vulnerable people but they will prey
on anyone who will let them in. It is normally quite easy to
go down a road and pick out properties owned by the elderly
or less able; this is by no means a slur. If you can help
elderly and vulnerable neighbours spruce up the front of
their properties with a coat of paint and some colourful
well maintained flower beds or planters you can help to put
these con artists off the scent whilst building your links
in the community.

On Tuesday, 3rd March, 2009 there was an ANPR
(Automated Number Plate Reader) operation on Chequers Way N13 from from 1
p.m. to 3.30 p.m. and here are the results:3
Arrests for driving offences;
7 cars impounded for no insurance;
39 Vehicles were stopped in all for document checks or
driving offences.
Along with dealing with Traffic Offences an ANPR is a
great way to detect burglars travelling between boroughs and also cutting
down on motor vehicle crime.
