Community Picnic 2010

The Bowes Park Garden Group Community Picnic on 12 June was a very successful event.  Approx 100 people attended with their families.  The sun shone for us!  We had face-painting, a guitar player from Amnesty Drummers who serenaded us with Beatles songs and involved the children shaking maracas.  A local musician who played Bob Marley wandered in and a local juggler added to the entertainment.  We also had plant, jewellery and a cake stall.  A magician called Lenny entertained the children and the highlight of the afternoon were Morris dancers from Chingford Morris.  Lynne Featherstone, MP and Cllr. Matt Cooke said a few words.  A good time was had by all!

Gardening sessions are held on the first Saturday of the month (unless the weather is dreadful) and you will be very welcome to come to the Community Garden from about 11 a.m. until around lunchtime - any or all of it.  There are lots of jobs to do - both large and small - from litter-picking (tools provided) to tree pruning.  Planting and generally enjoying helping make these sessions fun... and more volunteers are needed.  So do come along, if only to enjoy watching others work!!!"

The Community Garden is located in Myddleton Road and is one of the Association's achievements. It is run by a sub-group of the Association, the "Bowes Park Community Garden Group".  What follows on this page are some details of the many activities we have held in the Community Garden in 2008 and 2007, and some pictures of the garden, of which we are rightly very proudEach month volunteers tidy, prune and plant to make sure that this tranquil garden is an attractive place for relaxation and enjoyment. Enquires to be addressed to Sarah Harris 020 8881 5195 or email her about the Garden here.

New Mosaic in the Community Garden

The Butterfly Mosaic - designed and made by 'Mosaic Miranda' (Mranda Andrea) with the assistance of a group of helpers - young and old who attended her workshops Many thanks to all those who participated in its creation and who provided muscle power for lifting it onto the wall above the Community Garden.

For yet another year running, our Garden has won the  prestigious Green Pennant award (like a Blue Flag award for a beach). We have been winners in the past, too!  The garden is judged against a number of criteria, including how welcoming, accessible, and well-maintained it is. The award will make it easier for us to obtain funding for the garden and attract visitors. A big thank you to Haringey Council and all the members of the local community who worked hard to ensure the garden reached the required standard.

A record 73 green spaces have been rewarded with a Green Pennant, the highest national accolade for sites managed by voluntary and community groups.

Parliamentary Under Secretary of State, Baroness Andrews said: "I would like to congratulate all those whose hard work has resulted in this year’s green flag winners. In our busy modern lives, parks and green spaces are invaluable as areas where young and old can come together to relax, exercise and play. “

Paul Todd, Green Flag Award scheme Application Manager, said: “The increasing number of Green Pennant Award winners highlight the important role they play in bringing people together and improving their quality of life. Congratulations to all those volunteers whose hard work and dedication has brought this award of excellence.”
